What Do I Need to Know About Parking & Transportation?

Things to know if traveling to UO campus from outside of the Eugene area:

SFYCA does NOT provide parking or transportation to and from programs. Please plan to drop off and pick up your student at designated times and locations.

There is NO overnight parking available

If transportation is a barrier and you are traveling from Portland, Tualatin, Woodburn, Salem or Albany, we suggest the POINT Bus as an option. It travels directly to and from the UO Campus and tickets are purchased through Amtrak. If traveling from Corvallis, we suggest the FLiXBUS that travels to and from the UO Campus.

If arriving by car:

The university has hourly pay-to-park areas located around campus at a rate of $2.00 per hour. Due to the Olympic Track and Field Trials held from June 22-30 at UO’s Hayward Field, many UO parking lots will be closed. Lots 52, 53, 54, and 59b will be the only available lots during this time.

For pick up on July 9, all lots will be open. 13th Ave Garage, 1355 Columbia St, located beneath the Ford Alumni Center, is accessed from 13th Ave, and is the easiest place for visitors to find parking close to Building B Hall. Only credit card payments are accepted at the garage exit, but the garage has centrally located kiosks which accept cash and credit cards.

More hourly Pay-To-Park areas along the street, can be found on E 15th Ave, Agate St, and E 13th Ave. Payment can be made at conveniently located kiosks which accept Visa, MasterCard, AMEX, Discover, U.S. bills, and quarters.

If arriving by air:

Students arriving from out-of-state should make arrangements to fly into the Eugene airport (EUG) on Friday, June 28 and depart on Wednesday, July 10. We provide transportation to and from the Eugene airport and will arrange early check-in and late check-out at the dorm. The cost is $89.70 for each additional night.

Please note that all students flying into Eugene should try to be on a flight scheduled to arrive no later than 10:00 pm and depart no earlier than 8:00am (if at all possible). This policy guarantees the students’ safety if a flight is delayed and/or a connection is missed.

We are NOT able to provide transportation to/from the Portland (PDX) airport.

Who Are the SFYCA Employees?

In addition to our Program Coordinator and Administrative staff, SFYCA prides ourselves on our college student employees. SFYCA student employees are positive, diverse, and highly motivated college students, and/or recent SFYCA alumni, who bring enthusiasm and a breadth of life experiences to the SFYCA programs. College employees play an active part in each student’s life as positive role models. All college employees are selected from a competitive field of applicants and have cleared criminal background checks as well as a youth protection course. All SFYCA staff are mandatory reporters.

College employees are CPR and First Aid certified and complete a thorough training program covering program philosophy, developmental needs of student participants, risk and behavior management, and emergency procedures. Most importantly, college employees make it their mission to create a fun, safe, inclusive, and memorable experience for every SFYCA participant!

What Are the Student Expectations, Policies, & Behavior Management?

SFYCA is committed to ensuring that YOU, the student, feel safe during your experience at SFYCA. The program has developed expectations that will be enforced throughout SFYCA programs, which will allow SFYCA to provide you with the best experience possible.

University Code of Conduct

As a university-sponsored program, we (employees) and you (parents/guardians and student participants) are bound by the University CODE OF CONDUCT. Under this code, the University of Oregon may initiate disciplinary action and sanctions imposed against any student found guilty of committing, attempting to commit, or intentionally assisting in the commission of any of the following prohibited forms of conduct:

  • Illegal use, possession, or furnishing of dangerous or narcotic drugs on university owned or controlled property or at university sponsored or supervised activities.

  • Tampering with fire-fighting equipment, turning on a false alarm, or engaging in behavior that constitutes a significant fire hazard.
  • Hanging or climbing on or through windows, roofs, and ledges.

  • No racial or gender discrimination

Cell Phone Policy

Participants are permitted to bring a cell phone; however, cell phones must be left in the dorm rooms. There will be a period in the evening where students can have their cell phones to connect with family. Cell phones that are taken out of Building B Hall will be confiscated and returned at the end of the day. Activity Directors will have phones in their rooms that can be made available to students who do not have a cell phone, and Activity Directors will have cell phones with them during the day in case of emergency. Building B Hall is unable to provide landlines in the rooms for participants.

Not only can cell phone use be a distraction but it can also lead to unwarranted cyber-bullying. We respect that this may be a difficult challenge for employees, student participants, and parents; however, we believe in the benefits of a no cell phone policy while the SFYCA program operates (7 AM – 9 PM). We would like our SFYCA students to focus on building relationships with new peers rather than isolating themselves on electronic devices.

COMPUTERS AND OTHER DEVICES

  • If students want to take a photo during SFYCA outside of the residence hall, they must use a dedicated camera.

  • If students want to bring a computer, laptop, tablet, or other such devices, they are free to do so but it must be kept in the dorm room at all times.

Behavior Management Policies

The SFYCA program is committed to ensuring each student has a positive, safe, and enjoyable experience at SAIL for developing social skills and learning. The misbehavior of one student, or a group of students, should not be allowed to negatively impact the experience of others. The SFYCA program staff makes every effort to help students understand clear definitions and expectations of acceptable and unacceptable behavior. We respond to misbehavior and conflicts consistently and appropriately with a zero-tolerance for violence, bullying, and unsafe behaviors. SFYCA reserves the right to conduct a room check in the event of wellness, security and/or safety concerns. Depending on the misconduct, parents/guardians will be required to pick up your student immediately.

The SFYCA program is committed to ensuring each student has a positive, safe, and enjoyable experience at SFYCA for developing social skills and learning. SFYCA participants are expected to conduct themselves in a manner appropriate to living on campus.

Disciplinary action in response to infractions of the University of Oregon policy or the Stangeland Family Youth Choral Academy rules is left to the discretion of the SFYCA staff and the OBF Director of Programming and Administration, who reserve the right to take all actions considered to be in the best interest of the student and the program. Should any student’s behavior violate any of the above rules, formal disciplinary action may occur as follows with the SFYCA staff and the OBF Director of Programming and Administration maintaining complete discretionary power to eliminate steps 1 and 2 if it is determined that the infraction warrants that action.

  1. In the event of an initial infraction, the following actions may be taken by a SFYCA staff member or Activity Director: early curfew, parental notification, referral to SFYCA program administrator for further action or, in extreme cases, sheriff notification and eviction from the residence hall and the SFYCA program.
  2. In the event of continued infractions, the student’s actions will be documented in writing and OBF/SFYCA administrators informed of the infraction. The participant will be scheduled for a meeting with the Coordinator of Education. After ascertaining the facts of the situation, the Coordinator will determine whether parental notification, probation and/or expulsion are warranted. If determined warranted, the Executive Director of the Oregon Bach Festival will then be consulted for a final decision.
  3. In the event of expulsion, the student’s parents or guardian will be contacted to make arrangements for the student’s safe return home. If SFYCA arranges transportation, the parent or guardian is expected to reimburse SFYCA in full for all travel costs. Expulsion is at the absolute discretion of the SFYCA staff and the OBF Executive Director. No refund of fees or award of college credit will be made to a participant who has been expelled.
  4. Any SFYCA participant found to have violated the rules pertaining to the possession or use of alcohol or drugs, possession of weapons, violence or intimidation, theft, damage or vandalism shall be immediately expelled upon the first infraction.

What if My Student Takes Medication and/or Supplements?

Please provide information on the digital Health Form about any prescription medicines that your student is bringing, with details about dosage and schedule of medication.

We encourage students to bring only the medications and/or supplements required to be taken during specified program hours. All medications/supplements must be turned in to our SFYCA employees during check-in. Provide written permission to administer the medication, including dosing instructions. All medication/supplements must be in the original container with the student’s name, the dose, the expiration date, and the medication name. Over-the-counter medications can be administered under the same conditions. Medication/supplements will be stored safely with SFYCA employees. The only exceptions to turning in medications will be inhalers and Epi-Pens. All others will need to have prior authorization from the SFYCA program coordinator. We disburse medications at 7:30 a.m. and 9:30 p.m. daily unless otherwise specified by the parent/guardian and student.

Insulin Shots: For medical and safety reasons, SFYCA employees will not administer insulin shots or medications requiring similar procedures unless the student is unresponsive. We will work with you and your student’s medical providers to explore other reasonable accommodations.

What if my student becomes sick or injured?

Minor emergencies will be handled by a doctor at Best Med Urgent Care, Patterson clinic. Major emergencies will be handled by the Emergency Room at Eugene’s Sacred Heart Medical Center. Parents are expected to carry their own medical and dental insurance for their children. All costs for medical treatment are the responsibility of the parent.

There are certain guidelines the SFYCA program will follow to try to prevent the spread of illness. We will have ill students wait in separate spaces until they are able to be picked up. We will send a student home if they have any of the following symptoms:

  • Fever of 101+ degrees F
  • Prolonged diarrhea or nause
  • Vomiting
  • Severe cough
  • Unusual yellow color to skin or eyes
  • Difficult breathing or abnormal wheezing
  • Complaints of severe pain

If these symptoms arise, a parent or guardian will be contacted to immediately pick up the student. If your student has had any of the above symptoms, they cannot return to the program until they have been “symptom free” for at least 24 hours without the help of medications (48 hours for vomiting and diarrhea).

If a student has mild symptoms, which do not impair their functioning, they can remain in program and the parent or guardian will be notified when they pick up their student.

If a student falls ill or is injured at SFYCA, our employees will make every attempt to contact a parent/guardian and/or emergency contact. We will take all necessary precautions to ensure students receive proper medical attention, including hospital transportation via ambulance if necessary. Employees are trained to determine if it is a non-emergency or emergency. In the event of non-emergency, our employees are first on the scene trained in First Aid/CPR and can administer minor first aid. In emergencies, or a student becomes ill or injured during programs and it is determined that they need to go home, we require a parent/guardian or emergency contact to be available to pick them up in a timely fashion.

What are your rules and regulations around Contagious Illnesses?

As a unit of the UO School of Music and Dance, OBF’s contagious illness policies are determined by the UO, which follows public health guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Oregon Department of Human Services. **If a participant becomes ill and tests positive for COVID, they will be moved to a single room to isolate. Parents/guardians will be called by the SFYCA Program Coordinator to arrange pick up logistics for the participant to head home.

What if My Student Has Allergies?

Please provide SFYCA employees with written instructions stating what the allergy is, what level of exposure prompts a reaction, and which symptoms prompt which response, including the plan of action if your student is exposed to the allergen. SFYCA employees go over this with you prior to the first day of SFYCA.

Are Visitors Allowed?

We do not allow drop-in visitors at SFYCA. The only exception is SFYCA Soloist event on Friday, July 5 at 2:30 pm at the UO School of Music and Dance – Berwick Hall, Tykeson Rehearsal Room when we invite parents/guardians to attend. If you would like to visit your student during program hours, please plan arrangements with our Program Coordinator.

How Are Room Assignments Determined?

Each student will be assigned a roommate based on gender identity. Between SFYCA Counselors, SFYCA Chorus Liaison and SFYCA Administrative Liaison, we will have employees on duty around the clock and living on each floor, available in case of emergency. Showers and restrooms are located in each room at Building B Hall.

Rooms for females will be on one wing of Building B Hall: males on another wing. If you are non-binary, please let us know so that we can work with you. Each student will receive his or her own room key and lanyard. For safety and security reasons, only SFYCA staff will be given keys to the outside doors. If the room key is lost, the student must pay $80 for a replacement key. This fee is set by University Housing. If a key is not returned at check-out, it is assumed to be lost and the student will be billed for the replacement.
